I am a Juilliard-trained professional orchestral musician, and an Industrial Organizational Psychology Practitioner. Unusual, yes.
One of the main ways I combine these two backgrounds is in helping people to combat nervousness about public speaking and communication in the workplace. I’ve been nervous on some of the biggest symphonic and opera stages in the world, and I know exactly what it feels like to know that I know what I am doing, yet somehow not be able to do it right in that moment.
Around 2012, after performing inconsistently during high-stakes auditions, I went back to school to study sport psychology, the physiology of nervousness, and counselling. I discovered all sorts of practical things about the science of how not to be nervous, and I created a program specifically to help people to prepare for their high-stakes career moments. I used my own program to help me to succeed at my dream audition, happily landing a spot in the orchestra of the Canadian Opera Company in 2017.
Today, I divide my time between performing in the opera and coaching people in high-stakes professional situations to be confident, prepared, and to deliver their best. A Master’s in Industrial Organizational Psychology (Harvard Extension School, forthcoming), keeps me in tune with my clients’ organizational environments.
My material brings the preparation tools and performance mindset of high-performing athletes and artists to professionals in all disciplines. I work with people in science, law, technology, finance, and of course, the performing arts.
